Traditional glass roof conservatories are less popular these days because they are quite inefficient spaces. Depending on their orientation, they tend to be too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.

However, technology has moved on considerably and their efficiency can be greatly improved by adding a solid, lightweight, insulated roof. Alternatively, there are modern glazing solutions that allow for more comfortable seasonal temperatures. So, you can still have an outlook onto your garden in an indoor space that is useable throughout the year.

Orangery Extensions

Orangery Extensions are a little bit more substantial that conservatories. They tend to have a brick-built base with large windows. Traditionally, they have a flat roof with a lantern, which is a large glass feature to allow natural light in. Of course, the design of modern orangeries doesn’t always have to follow this pattern. Like conservatories, they are a perfect way to enjoy your garden from the comfort of an indoor space.

When designing an orangery extension for a property, we’ll always evaluate the available space and the style of the house. We’ll advise on the best materials to use to ensure energy efficiency and longevity. And, of course, we’ll let you know if Planning Permission and Building Regulation consent is required.

House Extension Projects

Conservatories and orangeries are often incorporated into larger house extension projects. For example, a kitchen extension may incorporate a large, insulated conservatory or orangery to be used as a dining space. With large windows, it’s often a great place to dine or relax whilst looking out onto your garden.

If you are considering a conservatory or an orangery for your home, then we’d love to hear your ideas. We will survey your property, listen to your requirements and design you the perfect space. Most extensions of this type fall within Permitted Development rights. However, we’ll be able to confirm this for you, so you can rest assured that your project is fully compliant.
