With today’s busy lifestyles, people are looking for more convenient ways to keep fit. Garden gyms allow you to work out at your convenience and in privacy. Not only will you save on costly gym membership fees, but there’ll be no more queuing for a cross trainer.

The garden gym pictured above was designed for a martial arts teacher who ran one-to-one classes. So, it required a large clear floor space to one side and gym equipment to other. Although the building is very wide, it is under 2.5m tall and therefore was built under the Permitted Development criteria.

Planning Permission for your Garden Gym

If you are worried about the requirement for planning permission, then we can help you. As part of our design service, we’ll advise you on whether or not it is necessary. Typically, if the structure is kept below 2.5m and is not excessively large, then planning permission is not required.

It is possible to build a garden building over this height. However, it must not be within 2m of the boundary with your neighbours. There are other caveats involved, but we will advise you on the best way to design your building. We’ll do this by assessing your requirements and carrying out a survey of your garden.

We’ll design it according to your exact needs to make it as accessible and functional as possible. It can also be designed to either subtly blend in with your garden or to stand out as a feature.
